GIVING BACK GIVES BIG RETURNS
FOR NORTH VANCOUVER COMMUNICATIONS FIRM

Creative Wonders Receives Community Care Award at Ethics In Action Gala

Vancouver BC– Wednesday night the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel ballroom was filled to capacity with near 300 guests attending the 13th Annual Ethics in Action Awards amidst luscious silken greenery simulating BC’s cherished rain forests.

Global TV news anchor Chris Gailus emceed the gala event which applauded thirteen do-good award finalists at this year’s event.

Among them was Diane Lund, owner and founder of North Vancouver’s Creative Wonders Communications. Creative wonders shared the prestigious Community Care Small /Medium Business award - one of six award categories - with Victoria’s Elite Earth-friendly Cleaners.

Creative Wonders is founded on the principles of giving back to the community – “going beyond the mind, beyond the bottom line, and straight to the heart”, says founder Diane Lund.

Rick Nathorst, owner and co-founder of Victoria’s Elite Earth Friendly Cleaners accepted his business’s second EIA award in two years.

Can you say perchloroethylene? This and other toxic dry-cleaning solvents are what cause that peculiar smell on your clothes when you get them home from traditional, non-green dry-cleaners.  Rick and his wife, Laurel, set out to change all that two years ago by putting everything on the line to finance ‘greening’ their dry-cleaning business a little over two years ago.

Other BC finalists and award winners to be congratulated include Starbucks Coffee Canada, The Ethical Funds Company, Catalyst Paper, Crannog Ales, Accent Inns, Clayoquat Wilderness Resort, David Mincey of Camille’s Restaurant, Harry Kambolis of C and Nu Restaurants, Ethical Bean Coffee Company, Nick Noorani of The Canadian Immigrant Magazine, and Novex Couriers.

The BC Ethics in Action Awards were formed in 1994 to recognize BC businesses and business leaders who exemplify good corporate citizenship and community values.  To support these and other BC businesses working hard at doing things right, go online to ethicsinaction.com.

VICTORIA DRY CLEANER WINS BIG
ELITE EARTH-FRIENDLY CLEANERS AWARDED (AGAIN) AT
ETHICS IN ACTION CEREMONY

Vancouver, BC  Wednesday night the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel ballroom was filled to capacity with near 300 guests amidst luscious silken greenery simulating BC’s cherished rain forests (interestingly all this on the eve of Greenpeace’s international protest against Kimberly Clark’s clear-cut operations in Canada).

Global TV news anchor Chris Gailus emceed the gala event which applauded thirteen do-good award finalists at the 13th Annual Ethics in Action Awards.  Among them was Rick Nathorst, owner and co-founder of Victoria’s Elite Earth Friendly Cleaners to accept the business’s second EIA award in two years.

Can you say perchloroethylene?  It’s that peculiar smell on your clothes after they’ve been dry-cleaned.  This and other dry-cleaning solvents are known toxic hazards to both the environment and human health.   Rick and his wife, Laurel, set out to change all that two years ago by putting everything on the line to finance ‘greening’ their dry-cleaning business a little over two years ago.

Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients - Catalyst Paper, Crannog Ales, Creative Wonders, Elite Earth-friendly Cleaners, Ethical Funds Company, Harry Kamboulis of C Restaurant fame, and Starbucks Coffee Canada – for doing things right by keeping the principles of good stewardship on par with profit.

And to finalists – Accent Inns, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, David Mincey of Camille’s Restaurant, Ethical Bean Coffee Company, Nick Noorani of the Canadian Immigrant Magazine, and Novex Couriers – congratulations on your nominations and for doing things right.

Those interested in supporting BC businesses who are doing things right are encouraged to go online at ethicsinaction.com.

GOOD CORPORATE CITIZENS STAND UP AND BE RECOGNIZED
Ethics in Action Accepting Applicaitons for 13th Annual Awards

VANCOUVER, BC -- These days employing sustainability practices is not just good for the environment; it makes good business sense too. Canadian consumers are more demanding of the places they do business with and British Columbians are leading the trend.

According to a recent Ipsos-Reid poll, 75% of British Columbians consciously have made the decision to purchase a product or service from a company because they felt it did business in a socially responsible way, and 68% of Canadians pay attention to corporate social responsibility issues.

Ethics in Action, BC’s respected voice in ethical business, is now in it’s 14th year rewarding innovative companies as well as courageous individuals for leadership in social and environmental management. This year’s gala awards evening is on November 2nd. Award nominations and applications are now being accepted.

In the early years, companies earning awards for social and environmental leadership were pioneers in Corporate Responsibility. “It’s been exciting to see these practices move from fringe to mainstream business. To see companies using triple-bottom line decision-making in their core strategy as well as in every day operations,” says Maureen Cureton, Board spokesperson for the BC Ethics in Action Society. “These visionaries view sustainability as an opportunity, not simply an obligation.”

Ethics in Action Awards recipients are both large and small firms, and come from a wide variety of business sectors across the province – retail, manufacturing, personal services, banking, printing, advertising, and high tech are a few industries winning awards in recent years.

Online nominations take only a few minutes and can be made in Environmental Excellence, Community Care, Overall Leadership in Corporate Responsibility, or Individual Impact. Individuals and businesses who are committed to corporate social responsibility are encouraged to apply direct at www.ethicsinaction.com.  But hurry - the deadline for completed applications is July 31st.

BC Ethics in Action Society Announces Call for Nominations

VANCOUVER, BC: For over a decade, Ethics in Action, BC’s respected voice in ethical business, has been rewarding forward looking companies for leadership in social and environmental management. Today, the BC Ethics in Action Society announced the call for nominations for the 13th annual Ethics in Action awards.

In the early years, companies earning awards for social and environmental leadership were pioneers in Corporate Responsibility. “It’s been exciting to see these practices move from the fringe to mainstream business, and to witness companies integrating triple-bottom line decision-making into their core business strategy as well as into their day-to-day operations,” says Maureen Cureton, Board spokesperson for the BC Ethics in Action Society. These firms are improving the environmental and social performance of their business while balancing financial goals. Says Cureton, “They view it as an opportunity, not simply an obligation.”

Ethics in Action Awards recipients come from large and small firms, from a wide variety of business sectors, and from across the province. Past winners include Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Coldstar Freight, Hemlock Printers, Elite Earth Friendly Drycleaners, Toyota Canada, Frontrunners Footwear, Creo Inc., New Society Publishers, Chesterman Property Group, Thrifty’s Foods, and Duke Energy to name a few.

While Corporate Responsibility penetrates mainstream business, there’s still ample room for leadership and innovation as companies find ways to differentiate themselves and to stand out for their particular social and environmental programs and practices. So who’s doing what? This year the BC Ethics in Action Society has adjusted their nominations process in order to attract broader participation. The goal is to hear more news about businesses and business leaders who are championing Corporate Responsibility.

The new on-line nomination process takes only 5 minutes to fill out, and nominees are then invited to apply for awards in the categories of Environmental Excellence, Community Care, Overall Leadership in Corporate Responsibility, or Individual Impact.

The BC Ethics in Action Society urges early nominations, so that nominees can meet the award application deadline, July 31, 2006.
